outbreakorn says:
May i ask why you switched over to php after so many years using asp?
outbreakorn says:
I know you have probably been asked this a million times.
CJayC says:
Um, because GameSpot runs on PHP. Switching to their system makes sense, because I was the only one still using ASP.
outbreakorn says:
But why make such radical layout changes if you weren't going to at least add a few upgrades/user abilites?
CJayC says:
You've never coded in the real world before, or you wouldn't be asking that question.
outbreakorn says:
What real world, this is the Internet.
CJayC says:
As a job, I mean.
outbreakorn says:
Seriously, I've been coding for 5 years, 3 on php, what could possible be lost by giving people an extra reason to go to the boards.
outbreakorn says:
I've seen your traffic slipping.
CJayC says:
If you're looking at Alexa, don't believe those figures.
outbreakorn says:
Just overall, Alexa yes, but your message boards seem to have dropped activity. And for the summer. I may be wrong, but that is what I've seen.
CJayC says:
Traffic's actually pretty steady. No major losses, no major increases. We made up what we lost before the switchover (we actually were losing traffic before the site change due to performance issues), but now that we've fixed them, we're back to normal.
CJayC says:
We never lost any traffic because of the site switch, but because the performance of the boards sucked.
CJayC says:
And, getting back to the original point: When converting code, you always do a straight conversion. New features come after everything's been converted and is completely stable.
outbreakorn says:
I'm just saying if it was from scratch, which I believe it was (I have no idea about the histroy of your source code) then why no spice it up, even if it's small. The roar over the switch has long since died down, but I still find the source VERY lacking, esp from the asp counterpart.
outbreakorn says:
I mean honestly, other than custom themes, it seems you just went downgrading everyhting.
CJayC says:
It wasn't from scratch at all, it was a functional page-by-page conversion. But not line-by-line; instead, we make the system object oriented.
outbreakorn says:
Quick question, does ASP use SQL?
outbreakorn says:
I've never worked with ASP
CJayC says:
ASP uses ODBC, which can connect with practically any back-end database. You can actually switch back-end databases using ASP without re-coding any of the scripts (except, of course, where the SQL syntax changes)
CJayC says:
If you changed back-ends with PHP, everything gets re-written.
outbreakorn says:
Yeah, I got you.
outbreakorn says:
So honestly, do you plan on adding things to the board code, or going to leave the status quo to gather dust?
CJayC says:
Oh, adding stuff. But there's no big drive towards it right now at all; other things take precedence. Like, the tons of little bugs to squash.
outbreakorn says:
God, i know, I have those myself. I am rewriting everyhting Jay wrote. I've actully coded 45 hours in the last 4 days (my girlfrind, who lives with me, is out of town, so I have some freetime)
outbreakorn says:
Actully, not really rewritting right now, but adding
CJayC says:
The problem with adding things is that if you're not adding them to a system you know is running perfectly (or, at least pretty well), when new problems pop up (and they always do), you don't know what the cause really was.
outbreakorn says:
I coded with Jay on the boards, and know my source in and out, I just don't like how he codes (very inconsitent, one page full of doulbe quotes, other pages don't have quotes around array keys) so I want to get it all flowing better.
CJayC says:
Understandable.
CJayC says:
I keep asking myself now, "Why did I wait so long to switch to Firefox?"
outbreakorn says:
I hate firefox.
outbreakorn says:
I'm an Opera man myself.
outbreakorn says:
Everyone prasies it like it's perfect.
CJayC says:
Opera's too darn buggy. Actually, Firefox wasn't really usable until it hit 0.8.
outbreakorn says:
All i get "omg, new build of firefox, lets's get it"
outbreakorn says:
Firefox was .8, Firebird was everything before it.
CJayC says:
I know. I've had one version or another of Mozilla on my system since the early versions.
outbreakorn says:
I'm all for Mozilla, just tired of hearing about Firefox.
outbreakorn says:
Opera, i can't get enough of, do you have 7.52?
CJayC says:
It's just now gettting to where you can replace IE, though. Took 'em years to figure out some of the simpler features that are built into IE.
outbreakorn says:
I heard 7.0 will have tabs.
CJayC says:
Yes, and more zero-day exploits, no doubt.
outbreakorn says:
Heh.
CJayC says:
The first time I got hit with a virus using a fully patched machine with a running virus scanner, I was a bit pissed.
outbreakorn says:
Bought time you jumped off Microsoft, leaving ASP, denouncing IE.
outbreakorn says:
(I know you worked with ASP before you started GFQ)
CJayC says:
Hey, if you're running a server by yourself, you cannot touch Win2K. Setup is fast and painless.
outbreakorn says:
I'm getting a server in Novermber hopefully
outbreakorn says:
Dunno what OS i will run, probably Linux though.
CJayC says:
They're fun. I wouldn't want to configure my own Linux box at all though. Hell, I couldn't even get a Linux desktop up and running a few months back. No network card I could find had built-in drivers, and even compiling my own wasn't working.
outbreakorn says:
Haha.
outbreakorn says:
What do you use? I have slackware on this machine, but never use it anymore, no time for the stress it can cause
CJayC says:
I run WinXP exclusively at home (Pro versions, just because I have the licenses and it's got a few extra features that are fun). My last remaining server out there still runs Win2K, although I only use it for mail for the most part.
CJayC says:
If I can wean myself off of running my own mail server, I can be co-lo free for the first time in 7 years.
CJayC says:
Although, I really really like running my own mail server.
outbreakorn says:
I was going to work on a mail cliant after my own server is all set up, kinda like g-mail/hotmail. I have a few designs drawn up, just need to get the actual hardware.
outbreakorn says:
I am running out of room on my store bought service that I am runnint the OB on, 2.97 megs of space left
CJayC says:
I bought a nice package a few years back, turned all my mail into IMAP boxes, and I can use both webmail and any mail client (I use Eudora) to check it from any machine. Handy.
outbreakorn says:
Where is the fun in buying something? Don't you remember how much fun it was when you were poor, and coding for the fun of it?
CJayC says:
I don't think I've ever coded for the fun of it, I generally code because I know I can do something better than anything I could buy.
outbreakorn says:
I code to...dunno, prepare me for the future (want to code) I was always told, if you know something better than everyone else, they will hire you, befre anyone else, and that is how you make your money.
outbreakorn says:
I also code right now since I can never feel like my source is complete, I have literally a book of things I want to do with my site.
CJayC says:
I actually prefer design to coding. Although, I design best in code itself sometimes.

outbreakorn says:
Oh, btw, if you don't mind me asking. There was talk that Onion/Script Tease talked to you, then you just silenced him about something, and I haven't taked to the guy since March, so I never asked him what you talked to him about. Care to enlighten, if you even can make sense of that last question...
outbreakorn says:
I like seeing something work. Nothing like actully seeing your creations come around after they were on paper
CJayC says:
As for Onion, he honestly wanted to create the GameFAQs boards for us and have us use his code. He had some good ideas, of course, but didn't really have a good handle on the situation as a whole. When I told him our traffic numbers alone he kind of stumbled a bit.
outbreakorn says:
Haha, he's not that good, he would have more holes than even you.

outbreakorn says:
He does have a few good ideas.
CJayC says:
I mean, we spent months re-working the boards from ASP to PHP (and at the same time building a GameSpot front end to them), and we thought he could do it all himself from scratch.
CJayC says:
*he
outbreakorn says:
Yeah, he's very stuck up on his code, he ridicules Jay, even though Jay has been coding for about 7 years, while he only about 2 years
outbreakorn says:
And Jay runs circles in his abilites around ST.
outbreakorn says:
Actully, i don't know if ST has even been coding for a year yet.
CJayC says:
ST?
outbreakorn says:
Script Tease, Onion, whatever his name is this week.
CJayC says:
Ah.

Oh yeah, are you ever going to release your ASP source for people to look at, and point out your flaws. (not me, just saying you know people would be ungrateful)
CJayC says:
Nope, can't do it. CNET bought the code so it's not mine to release, and the current boards are still based off of those same concepts.

Ah, did you ever release how much they padded your wallet? Or still going to just give ballpark figures.

This was the damn problem, I rewrote half the pages in a better, less-buggy style and I told obo not to fuck around with it because his style was even worse than my old ones which were still lying around. Then I realized that they were structured in such a way that I couldn't work with them anymore and that I would have to totally rewrite everything if I wanted to get the advanced functionality that I strived for, but I didn't really care enough about message boards to bother doing that. MA/DSL/OB has always been just a hack, if he continues trying to build off of it he's going to run into problems like I did, plus it's just going to turn into more spaghetti code. Obo claims he has been coding for 3 years but he knows absolutely nothing of organization; he's still just as naive as ever.

You have turned into a little angsty bitch ant.

I wasn't sure what it was before, but I'm just starting to think you're jelous of the work you put into SO to have it be a second rate spinoff. I thought you had much better character than that, but I'm not always right as much as I'd like to be.

All you do is bitch and moan about how Outboards is MA source and all the users suck. Boo fucking hoo. Bottom line is even if half of the OB's userbase were retards it would still have more intelligent users than SO.

If you're not jelous then maybe you're just insecure. Calling outboards MA source is just a way to undermind the work that has been put into it to seperate it from everyone else and taking cheap shots at the userbase is only because SO never got off the ground.

Not that any of this is new. Since the start people have been around to bitch simply because others were succeeding. Stop being a run of the mill troll and try to bring some intelligence that I know you have to the table instead of spouting the same nonsense over and over again.

Take all that how you want, but just realize I only wasted my time with this shit because I thought you were better than that. Also I won't mind if you delete this since what I have posted is for you only.
