How much hard disk space can Windows 98 handle? |
: | | | | |

I have an 8 GB hard disk and want to put in a second one. I was told by someone that Windows 98 can only take up to 32 GB in total. Is this true, or is there another figure or no limit at all?

I'm almost sure that that is bull****. But not absolutely sure. =P (I have Win 98, but my HDD is only 20GB.)

I'm pretty sure the HDs are independent of each other, unless you are going to do some funny stuff like stripe them or try to make one partition that combines them. If you're just doing two separate drives, then I'm almost certain you can have each one be as large as Windows can handle (not sure how large that is, but I'm sure it's larger than 40 GB at the very least, probably around 256 or 512 GB or more).

Windows 98 can handle 2 TB (1 TB = 1024 GB) if I recall correctly... but your IDE controller (usually your motherboard is your IDE controller) can only handle up to 123 GB (or something close, I don't remember off the top of my head), unless you bought one of the new ones that comes with a 160 GB Maxtor drive...

Why 20 GB sections? W98 can handle a FAT32 partition much larger then that... It's Win2k and WinXP that can't format a FAT32 partition greater then 38 GB.

But if you had Win2k and/or WinXP, why would you be using FAT32? Why not NTFS?

Chaap- nope, DOS programs work fine under a NTFS file system.
You would use FAT32 if you were dualbooting between 2K/XP and 9x and wanted some stuff that you could access under 9x (like "My Documents")

But there is a driver (unsupported, of course) that lets 9x access NTFS volumes.

Unless you are on a LAN or some permanent network, I see NTFS as being rather pointless... that just me though.
